This is where I spend hours and Mike 5 minutes!

This is where we play with formatting options

Every time WordPress gets an update, new options are likely to appear. Old ones may not work the same. Things may break. So better to test them on a safe page….

New formatting options

Cover blocks let us overlay photos with text, with normal block controls. You can’t set text transparency, however. And if you set the text style to bold, you get black (or gray) text, period. No color. Maybe with css classes?

WYSIWIG? Forget it!

Nothing is the same between editing and viewing. The image is a lot bigger when it’s viewed than when it’s edited. Text has more room. Multi-column blocks may clip on tablets.

The only way to test is to have a page like this, update the site and view it on multiple devices.

Testing

A really great thing is that images now can have universal (global) captions, so each image has the same caption all over this site. Unless they don’t display. Go figure.

Or, we could use a table with cover blocks…

Notes on covers

Covers are tricky!

  • The overlay text can’t be positioned other than left-center-right horizontally. You can’t go top – middle – bottom vertically.
  • The text inside covers can be links, but not images nor background. In other words, the cover can’t become a large button. But clicking on “take me home” takes you… home, this site! You can link to any address, too.
  • Make sure side-by-side items have the same minimum pixel height or things won’t line up!

This is a media and text block. Is it any different than putting an image block in a column? More convenient perhaps…
